When i was visiting Samoa back in summer 2017 for two months my host used a fire plough but made from "fau" or beach hibiscus wood. I had brought my fire drill from home and tried to use it there. Found out why the fire plough is used in tropical climates. The ambient humidity does not allow the fire drill to work.
Like what I have done. No problem. It's likely that your hand drilling skills lack pressure. Or your wood contains starch which is characterized as slippery when rubbed
I'm from California and in this climate the fire drill works great. In Samoa couldn't get wood dust to get hot enough. Had to be the high humidity. @@DalemGumino
